Chi siamo

MUSICA.

MUSICA was created in spring 1977, founded and edited by Umberto Masini who, in his first editorial, was very open about his aims and goals: firstly, he set his focus on a target “made of music lovers, collectors and professionals”, and then he described the two lines that should trace the root. These were a large part of the magazine devoted to recordings and the reappraisal of the performer “as essential and necessary part of musical creativity”. Almost 40 years later our world is very different, and the classical music “environment” has changed deeply (changed, not worsened: because we always tend to turn one’s past into a legend, forgetting the sad parts of it), but MUSICA still takes these conditions, these starting points very seriously. Discography has switched from 33 rpm to the reign of CD, from videotapes to DVD and Blurays, arriving to nowadays’ supremacy of liquid music, which is accompanied by the LP revival, even if it’s still a niche. Many editors have led the magazine, from Umberto Masini (1977-1999) to Laura Poli, from Stephen Hastings (2001-2014) to Nicola Cattò, in charge since 2014: MUSICA has become a monthly magazine, the news section has become richer and more accurate, the style has reflected the tastes of the contributors and the changing world, but we have always had as polestar intellectual integrity and knowledge. MUSICA is not an “easy” magazine, for every reader: but our choice must have been wise, if MUSICA still exists after 40 years, while our old competitors are not. We took part in the most prestigious international juries, from Cannes to Midem Classical Awards and then, nowadays, ICMA, giving awards to great performers and not listening to the once powerful cd majors. We devoted a large amount of space to the “big names”, but also encouraged the young artists, particularly the Italian ones, who had exceptional opportunities. We did our best to renew and improve ourselves, while keeping our roots firm and this brand new website will prove it. Because internet is redundant with forum, reviews of concerts and operas, but we can — maybe arrogantly — affirm that MUSICA can offer a seal of quality not easily to be found elsewhere.
